The Danish Girl

Genderqueer Australia were delighted to view an early preview screening of the film The Danish Girl. Based on the book by David Ebershoff, The Danish Girl is the remarkable love story inspired by the lives of Lili Elbe and Gerda Wegener (portrayed by Academy Award winner Eddie Redmayne [The Theory of Everything] and Alicia Vikander [Ex Machina]), and directed by Academy Award winner Tom Hooper (The King’s Speech, Les Misérables). Lili and Gerda’s marriage and work evolve as they navigate Lili’s groundbreaking journey as a transgender pioneer.

Lili Elbe was one of the first Transgender women in the public eye and one of the first identifiable recipients of sex reassignment surgery. Lili was born a man, Einar Wegener, in Denmark in the late 1800’s and married artist Gerda Wegener before she began to identify as a woman. The film portrays the remarkable love story as together both navigate Lili’s groundbreaking journey as a transgender pioneer. Eddie Redmayne plays Lili and Alicia Vikander plays her wife who remained devoted throughout the process.

Below are 2 film images of Eddie Redmayne as Lili that have been released so far.
