In this BBC documentary, journalist Linda Pressly speaks with activists around the world who live as neither male nor female. In communities around the globe, non-binary people are rejecting the categories of ‘male’ and ‘female’, and attempting to redefine gender identity. Queer, gender-queer, gender-fluid, gender-variant, third gender – these are all terms non-binary people use to describe themselves. Have to say, it’s nice to see (or in this case, hear) the gender binary being discussed …

They say: While there have been significant leaps forward in trans rights and acceptance in recent years, we appreciate that there is still much work to be done. I would like to live in a world where ‘male’ and ‘female’ cease to be categories of social distinction, to the considerable advantage of those labelled ‘male’ and the considerable disadvantage of those labelled ‘female’. And this sounds like a great idea. However, she then goes on to conflate gender identity as imposed by society, and gender identity as known …

It’s a sign of how much journalism has changed over the last few years that people in the public aren’t automatically shamed or labelled by the media (although there’s always the comment trolls to take up the slack). A case in point is the Steph Kretowicz‘s interview with American musician Shamir Bailey in online magazine Dummy. The focus is on Shamir’s latest album — Ratchet — and moves slowly and respectfully into more personal territory, including, stunningly …
