Looking for elders to participate in a new project called “Kinfolk”
Call for TGD Elders to participate in project working group. Kinfolk is a project that involves working with older Trans and Gender Diverse (TGD) Elders (65years+) and service providers to improve TGD Elders choice and control over gender identity and expression. In particular, it will address the restriction of gender expression by family members in ways that preserve family relationships.
To do this we will:
1. Work with TGD Elders to document their issues and concerns related to family (and what works) – through a survey, gender genograms and a workshop
2. Work with TGD Elders and relationships organisations to develop a resource for TGD Elders and their families
3. Work with TGDaged care service providers to explore their role in advocating for TGD Elders.
The project has been funded by the Department of Health. The project team includes: Dr Catherine Barrett (Director of Alice’s Garage), Kaye Bradshaw (Collective Impact) and TGD Elders Toni Paynter, Sally Conning and Kathy Mansfield.
Project Stages
1. Establish a working group of TGD Elders from all states and territories
2. Produce Gender Genograms – to debunk the myth of a gender binary
3. Survey TGD Elders to document what works and what restrictions on gender expression are experienced
4. Workshop for TGD Elders and family relationships services to document a resource for TGD Elders on strategies for working with families
5. Workshop for TGD Elders and aged care service providers on key issues for TGD Elders and the role of aged care service providers in advocating for or supporting TGD Elders (produce film showing TGD Elders describing issues and service providers responding)
6. Pilot the resources – disseminate nationally.
Working Group
The working group will be made up of TGD Elders from all states and territories. The role of working group members is to help shape the project to ensure it meets the needs of TGD
Elders. This will involve four points of contact over the next 12 months.
