NDIS Mental Health LGBTIQA+ Co-Design Focus Group

People like you – by Rose Moore

Project Overview

With funding provided by the NDIA, we are working to share and enhance reimagine.today, a FREE online resource that guides people living with a mental health condition through the step-by-step process of accessing the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).

The project has employed Peer Leaders in NSW/ACT, NT, QLD, SA, VIC and TAS to coordinate state-based Peer-led Networks and run a co-design process to develop additional resources for reimagine.today, that will further support people in accessing the NDIS. In particular, new resources and updates will improve accessibility for people from 4 priority diversity groups: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, people living in rural and remote areas, and LGBTIQA+ people.

LGBTIQA+ Co-design groups

The National LGBTI Health Alliance are working with the Mental Health Coordinating Council to conduct a co-design process alongside LGBTIQA+ people with lived experience, their family, carers, supporters, advocates and service providers to improve existing materials and create NEW reimagine.today supporting resources. Co-design provides an opportunity for people to contribute in a respectful, safe and supported environment. Our process includes a focus on LGBTIQA+ communities and will include a series of 3 face to face & 3 online focus groups, as well as other opportunities for participation.

Some things that will be talked about:

  • What is a psychosocial disability and what does that mean for you?
  • How can reimagine.today support you to access the NDIS?
  • What barriers do LGBTIQA+ people living with mental health conditions face in accessing the NDIS?
  • How can resources be improved to better support LGBTIQA+ communities to access the NDIS?

How Can I get Involved?

LGBTIQA+ people living with a mental health condition, their family, carers, supporters, advocates and service providers are invited to take part. Participants are welcomed to attend alone or with a supporter.

The Focus Groups will look to engage 8-12 people per group. Appropriate reimbursement will be provided to eligible consumer/carer participants.
